Why almost every client I get comes from a referral

Nobody refers their friends to a photographer because the photos were nice. They refer them because they had a bloody good time getting them, and honestly that's the thing I'm most proud of after 12 years of doing this job.

People come to me a little nervous, sometimes very nervous, usually with a husband who'd rather be doing literally anything else and kids who've already been bribed with Macca’s if they can get through this with a smile. And then somewhere between the first five minutes and the last, something clicks. Everyone relaxes, the kids start actually having fun, the husband cracks a real smile, and by the end of it we're all just hanging out and laughing and the photos are simply taking care of themselves.

I've never been the kind of photographer who takes herself too seriously, and I think that's a big part of it. I'm not precious about the process, I'm not barking directions or making everyone stand in a line, and I'm definitely not making it feel like a chore. I just make it feel easy, because it genuinely can be when you're working with someone who knows what they're doing and isn't going to make the whole thing weird, awkward and cringe.

The feedback I get after almost every single session is some version of "that was actually so fun" or "I can't believe how easy that was" or "my kids actually loved it." And those people go home and tell their friends, and their friends book me, and that's pretty much how my business has run for over a decade now.

So if you've been putting off booking a family session because you're convinced it's going to be awkward and stiff and you/your husband/your kids are going to hate it, that's exactly why you should have me photograph you. And who knows, you might just end up being the next person texting your friends telling them to book me!
