Most families find this easier than they expect. Kids are taken out of school early or start late for appointments all the time, and family photos are no different. They’re still an important family appointment, and one you’re likely booking far less often than a dentist visit.

In summer, there’s often plenty of light after school, so school time isn’t usually interrupted. In the cooler months, an afternoon session may mean taking the kids out of school an hour or two early. Morning sessions are also a great option. Everyone is fresh, full from breakfast, and not coming straight from an exhausting day at school.

Yes, but there’s only a handful available. My kids have almost finished high school so I’m trying to spend as much down time as I can with them before they fly the coop. It’s the one place where everyone can actually chill. Kids don’t need time to warm up, parents can relax and when snacks or a loo break are needed, they’re right there.

Photos made at home are so much more personal. They don’t look staged or generic, and they won’t look like anyone else’s session. They reflect your family as you are right now.

I’ve been photographing kids for almost 15 years and I’m a mum of teenagers. There’s nothing I haven’t seen.

Without tootin’ my own horn, I easily connect with kids through humour. It’s sarcastic, slightly self-deprecating, and occasionally involves taking the piss. Somehow it works, and we end up great mates by the end.
